The metamorphosis of Justy uki Tylor is complete: he’s no longer the passive dope who began the series, but a drunken wise fool out of a Zen fable. His transition is entertaining, but the filmmakers leave a lot of threads hanging when the 26-episode series ends. Tylor’s not-quite romance with Raalgon empress Azalyn continus, although she rejoins her fleet. At the behest of her intriguing minister Wang, she orders an all-out assault on the United Planets Space Force but places the noble General Dom in command. He and Tylor contrive to end the war–to the strains of the William Tell Overture–with no bloodshed and with each side able to claim victory. His mission accomplished, Tylor tires of the military. The crew of the derelict Soyokaze are given promotions and assigned to the Aso, the UPSF’s newest, most sophisticated cruiser, except for Yuriko, who’s made a deputy of intelligence. Of course, Tylor returns triumphantly in the Soyokaze at the last minute, his crew unites behind him, and they set off in search of new adventures–which soon follow in an original animation video series. It’s all played for laughs, but such major plot points as the outcome of Wang’s scheme to usurp the Raalgon throne and the reasons for the UPSF admirals’ attacks on Tylor are left unexplained and unresolved. Unrated: suitable for ages 12 and up: sexual humor, minor nudity, violence, alcohol use. –Charles Solomon

If you haven’t heard of the movie, here’s a quick plot:
A distraught warrior (the charismatic Jet Li) forces his toddler son to choose between a sword and a wooden horse. If he chooses the sword, together they will fight the corrupt government that killed their family; if he chooses the horse, the warrior will send him to join his mother–in hell. Thus begins The New Legend of Shaolin, a wild Hong Kong fantasy. Though the opening sounds grim, the movie shifts ahead seven years and becomes increasingly comic as its plot unfolds. The story centers around a map tattooed on the backs of five boys; it leads to treasure from the Ming dynasty that a heroic sect hopes to use to reestablish the Shaolin temple, which the government destroyed. Meanwhile, Li is forced by poverty to become the bodyguard of a blowhard merchant, who doesn’t realize that his bride-to-be is part of a mother-daughter team of notorious thieves. Meanwhile, a villain deformed by a poison that gives him invincible powers is hunting down the five boys, one of whom is the merchant’s son… As is usually the case with Hong Kong cinema, the filmmakers have crammed in enough stuff to fill several ordinary movies. The exaggerated stoic conversations between Li and his 7-year-old son, both of them stone-faced and painfully serious, are extremely funny, as are the bizarre bits when the bride’s mother masqurades as a ghost. And on top of all this are at least seven spectacular action sequnces that are both comic and exciting. A prime example of the uniqu joys of Hong Kong pop culture. –Bret Fetzer
